Our Lesson on Plant Life

First grade took a nature walk during Science class and collected leaves as part of their lesson on Plant Life. They brought them inside, looked up the names of the leaves, and used magnifying glasses to get a really close look at the leaf parts.

"Seeds"

First grade learned all about plants and their parts. They focused on seeds and where to find them. They opened up some fruits and vegetables and found out that seeds come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. It was very exciting and messy at the same time. They all enjoyed the activity except for one student who didn’t like avocados and their textures. I guess they won’t be seeing avocados for snack or hot lunch! Next science class they will discover that seeds have coats to protect them.

"Spoon Saints"

Our 6th graders did a great job researching saints.  Each student chose a saint.  They learned important information including when their saint was canonized, his/her feast day, virtues of their saint and how they can try to be more like their saint.    In addition to the research, each child took a wooden spoon and created What we like to call “ Spoon Saints”

Art of American Still Life

Thanks to art teacher, Armen Yepoyan, students in grades 4 through 8 had the opportunity to visit the "Audubon to Warhol" exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Museum. This exhibition offers 130 oil paintings, watercolors, and works in other media representing the finest accomplishments in the genre. Featuring masterpieces by John James Audubon, the Peale family, William Michael Harnett, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and others, this exhibition explores American still life from its beginnings in the late 1700s to the Pop Art era of the 1960s.

Dress Down Days For A Good Cause!

The staff of ASA is going “casual” for a good cause.  Each year the staff participates in several “Dress Down Days!”  The staff donates money to the American Cancer Society for the privilege of dressing casual for the day.  Last year we raised close to $400!  So if you notice a teacher dressing very casual, know it is for a GREAT cause!
