Any event enduring more than a quarter century has telling significance, and for the Armenian Sisters Academy, P.O.S.H. is such an occasion. From its inception, the intent has been to raise funds in order to help keep tuition rates affordable. Over the years, the Philadelphia community has overwhelmingly supported the event; this year was exceptionally festive with a record number of Academy parents and alumni in attendance
For the Nov. 20th event, the buzz centered on gaming tables which enabled guests to try their luck at blackjack and roulette. Those who beat the odds earned tickets for a chance at winning exciting gifts such as a flat screen TV, and iPad or outdoor grill. Equally enticing was the delicious mezza served by last year’s Academy graduates. As one guest commented, “The food alone was worth the price of admission!” Another donor initially contributed a beautiful piece of jewelry for the live auction and subsequently visited the Academy with his wife and young twins who they hope to enroll next fall. He was so impressed with the Academy, he replaced his donation with an even more valuable piece which created quite a bidding war!
Among the most coveted auction items are those created by the Academy students. Class gifts showcase the talents of each grade, and continue to amaze attendees with their creativity. From quilts displaying Montessori class drawings to student-designed wine labels to a framed, hand-drawn poster displaying Mer Badmuhtyoon (Our History), bidders’ paddles were flying in support of the students.
From its modest beginning in 1984, the evening has evolved from being held in an outdoor tent on the school grounds to a formal affair in the now-expanded Academy. Through the years, the fundraising efforts remain the same - donated gifts are raffled off, via silent, Chinese or live auctions, with all proceeds directly benefitting the Academy’s students. Working untold hours, ASA parent Arpy Minasian was this year’s solo chairlady. She and the P.O.S.H. committee worked diligently for 11 months to procure gifts including rugs, paintings, jewelry and vacation rentals so gifts appeal to all tastes.
Beyond the fundraising, however, is the feeling of warmth one feels as old friends greet each other, ASA graduates re-unite, and even the clergy from the local Armenian churches mingle among the guests. Ask any attendee their thoughts and you’ll hear “What a great night!” affirming that P.O.S.H. not only strengthened the school, but the broader Armenian community, as well.
